BUT FIRST, HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SELF-DISCIPLINE…
Self-discipline = Discipline of Self.
Self-discipline is the ability to control yourself in whatever situation you find yourself in and to make yourself work hard or behave in a particular way without needing anyone else to tell you what to do.
WHY DO WE NEED TO STRENGTHEN IT?
Self-discipline means self-control, which is a sign of inner strength and control of yourself.
Your very actions and reactions give you the power to make decisions. And if you stick to your good decision skills by utilizing self-discipline (and follow through with them by not wavering and changing your mind), you’ll possess one of the MOST important requirements for achieving ANY goal that you’ve set out for yourself.
IS HAVING SELF-DISCIPLINE A SKILL?
It may be easy to assume that some people were simply born with divine willpower because it comes so easy for them… but no, they are not born with it.
The self-discipline superpowers that they have are a learned skill trait and that means that you can harness them too!
10 ways to master self-discipline
1. KNOW YOUR WEAKNESSES
If you are not aware of your weaknesses, then now is the time that you ask your closest allies what they are. Knowing your weaknesses is actually a good thing. It will give you the insight that you need to become more confident in developing an awareness of what you need to improve.
Gain as much feedback as you can by monitoring. Monitoring helps us become experts on our own behaviours and it will make unhealthy habits way less of a hassle to change out.
Try keeping a calendar and track what you do.
The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Once you start seeing a pattern you’ll be better equipped to change them.
3. TAKE NOTES ON THE GOOD
Whether that be social media, fake friends, peer pressure, ego, or doing joyful things… The mind indirectly gives us a signal to do those tasks again and again by releasing dopamine.
So start releasing dopamine from healthy habits MORE and you’ll see your self-discipline to do them start to rise.
4. CONTROL YOUR TEMPTATIONS
If you want to maintain your self-discipline, then you need to control your temptations. Don’t satisfy yourself with temporary pleasures when you are alone, and stay hungry for success until you start feeling more confident.
5. YOU NEED INSANE MOTIVATION
For the first 20 seconds of ANY task (like waking up early to developing fitness goals) you need to have an insane amount of motivation to start. Once you mustered enough to start, then sustaining and finishing the task will be easy. One easy way to do this is to count down from 5 and do whatever it is you think you should do.
6. WORK ON A PASSION PROJECT
Passion projects bring out a sense of fun and creativity that inspires you to be more self-disciplined so that you can maintain it and carry it through.
To sum it up, you should never be doing something more than 20% of the time that you don’t like. If you do that’ll create stress and that gets in the way of your self-discipline.
7. MOVE TOWARDS YOUR GOALS IN SMALL STEPS
It’s simple. You can’t just go straight to the top with anything that you are pursuing because that will be difficult, but what you can do and that you have the power to do, is go little by little towards the goal.
You will notice by doing this, that your life will soon change and your self-discipline will start to be contagious to get more done.
8. MAKE A TO-DO LIST WITH THE POWER OF THREE
Moreover, to help make your small steps even more attainable… make a list of three small little action steps that you can do in order to master your goals. Once you start checking off one to three, you’ll then find that your self-disciple will be easier to create.
9. REPEATED PRACTICE IS NEEDED
Repeated practice of self-control will eventually help you to make better decisions along the way. If you relapse, do not give up. Just make sure that you get back on that horse and try again until you master your desired outcome. Repeated practice is needed.
10. FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY BUDDY
Change your thinking and become aware of your daily behaviours. Know that we don’t have to be perfect all of the time because no one is!
Make sure that your goals are attainable and not out of reach and keep going after what you want to master in your life. Like everything else that brings progress, the greatest struggle is always within ourselves. By buddying up with other people who are doing their own personal development challenges, it becomes a lot easier for you to continue on the right path. That’s where JCI comes in – it’s a great place to find people who also want to become better versions of themselves and provides a safe space where you can learn through doing.
